Littelfuse SP03A Series TVS Diode Arrays Provide Lightning Surge Protection for 1Gb Ethernet Port            2011-07-08

Littelfuse, Inc. (NASDAQ/NGS:LFUS) today announced the addition of the SP03A Series to its expanding line of TVS Diode Array ( SPA TM family) lightning surge and ESD protection devices. The SP03A is specifically designed for protection of Ethernet and T3/E3 data lines from lightning-induced transients up to a market leading 150A (tP=8/20μs).

                                                      

The SP03A Series combines the low-voltage TVS with a diode bridge to provide both longitudinal and differential protection in one package. Compared to similar competitive solutions available today, the SP03A-3.3BTG provides the highest peak surge rating with lowest differential capacitance of only 4.5pF. Furthermore, the extremely low dynamic resistance of less than 0.1? provides best-in-class clamping performance for sensitive Ethernet PHYs. The SP03A can be used to help manufacturers of telecommunication equipment comply with regulatory standards such as GR-1089, ITU, and YD/T and offer maximum reliability in the field.

Synchronous Boost Regulators Enable < 0.7V Operation With Any PIC®MCU

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, analog, and Flash-IP solutions, today announced the MCP1623 and MCP1624 (MCP1623/4) Synchronous Boost Regulators, which bring low-voltage support to any PIC® microcontroller, providing a customizable solution for single-cell battery applications. Featuring a start-up voltage of 0.65V and an operating voltage down to 0.35V, the MCP1623/4 regulators reduce the number of batteries needed in a typical design─even enabling designs to be powered from a single Alkaline, NiMh, NiCd, or disposable Lithium battery cell.

The MCP1623/4 Synchronous Boost Regulators extend battery life with up to 96% typical efficiency, shutdown current of less than one micro Ampere in all states and a true load-disconnect shutdown. The devices have an operating input voltage of 0.35 to 5.5V and an adjustable output voltage range of 2.0 to 5.5V. In reducing the number of batteries required, the MCP1623/4 regulators enable more environmentally friendly designs, with lower shipping and operating costs. The devices include over-temperature protection and provide 500 kHz PWM operation, enabling the use of smaller coils, with the MCP1624 providing automatic PWM/PFM switching.

Digital-to-Analog Converters From Microchip Enable Resolution

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, today announced the MCP4801/2, MCP4811/2 (MCP48XX) and MCP4901/2, MCP4911/2 (MCP49XX) Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs). The new products expand the Company’s portfolio of DACs with single- and dual-channel 8- and 10-bit devices featuring an SPI communication interface, as well as internal and external voltage-reference options. The MCP48XX family has an internal voltage reference, while the MCP49XX family accepts an external voltage reference. These DACs are appropriate for applications in the consumer (e.g., home appliances, LCD displays, computer peripherals); industrial (e.g., control systems, motor control, metering); and medical markets (e.g., ultrasound, ECG, sensor calibration), among others.


Because the MCP48XX and MCP49XX DACs offer both 8- and 10-bit resolution, designers can select the resolution needed for different applications. Additionally, having an integrated voltage reference reduces cost and space, while the external pin provides further design flexibility. Availability in small packages also saves space and makes the DACs easy to use.

PI New LinkSwitch®-PH and LinkSwitch®-PL LED Driver ICs Deliver Flicker-Free TRIAC Dimming

Power Integrations (Nasdaq: POWI), the leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, today announced two new families of TRIAC-dimmable, single-stage, power-factor-corrected LED driver ICs targeting solid-state lighting (SSL) applications. LinkSwitch-PH (optimized for isolated systems) and LinkSwitch-PL (optimized for non-isolated systems) deliver flicker-free monotonic TRIAC dimming and a user experience similar to that provided by incandescent illumination.

The LinkSwitch-PH and LinkSwitch-PL product families feature integrated single-stage power factor correction (PFC), enabling SSL luminaires to achieve PF > 0.9. LinkSwitch-PH devices incorporate primary-side-control technology, which eliminates the optocoupler and supporting components used in traditional isolated flyback designs. Non-isolated LinkSwitch-PL designs further reduce component count, resulting in improved reliability and a reduced bill of materials (BOM). Both IC families are monolithic – incorporating the controller and MOSFET onto a single silicon die – which simplifies PCB layout by minimizing component count and eliminating parasitics between the controller and power MOSFET. These new LinkSwitch products are optimized for high efficiency in simple flyback designs and operate at input voltages up to 305 VAC, enabling the development of both single-voltage and universal-input products suitable for residential and commercial lighting applications worldwide.

When operated within manufacturers’ temperature and drive-current guidelines, LEDs can be expected to operate for more than 50,000 hours. The weakest link in an LED lighting system is the driver circuitry, which is burdened with unreliable optocouplers and electrolytic capacitors. Power Integrations’ accurate primary-side-control technology, featured in LinkSwitch products, eliminates the optocoupler, and the new LinkSwitch LED driver IC product families do not require the use of electrolytic bulk capacitors. Designers using the LinkSwitch-PL and LinkSwitch-PH for SSL products can expect the operational life of the driver to match that of its accurately controlled LED array. 

Bill Weiss, lighting business development manager at Power Integrations, comments: “Both new product families are ideal for space-constrained LED drivers used in replacement lamps. The LinkSwitch-PH family, optimized for isolated designs and rated up to 50 watts output power, is also exceptionally effective for external LED ballasts, often used in downlighting, architectural lighting, signage, and outdoor lighting. Both devices reduce system BOM count and size, thereby increasing system reliability. These ICs enable designers to optimize system efficiency and meet or exceed all regulatory standards, such as ENERGY STAR? and EN61000-3-2.”

LinkSwitch-PH samples are available now in a halogen-free, ROHS-compliant eSIP?-7C package, priced between $1.18 and $1.71 each for 10,000-piece quantities. LinkSwitch-PL ICs will sample in August 2010 in compact SO-8 and eDIP?-12 packages.
